WALL STREET JOURNAL

These children! Stamping over concrete and asphalt with neither shoes nor socks, feet encrusted with grit and dirt. Which way are they heading? I'm too far away to tell. Need to get a better pair of binoculars. You'd think the office would supply some, but no. Have to buy them myself. Can't even get reimbursed... but they're at it again. Now they have pea shooters. (God, where did they find pea shooters? Amazing.) There must be at least 100 of them. Some standing, some milling about, most marching. Where are they going? Why are they here?

EXCERPT

There's no point in explaining how or why I turned my late grandparents' fully-furnished home into a detective agency slash apartment. I just did. The first floor was the agency and the top floor was the apartment. I kept the basement as it was. Cake decorating supplies, tools, washer and dryer, all of it. I left the first floor as it was, too. The front door opened into the living room, which served as a space for me to confer with clients. It made people feel comfortable. And since most of my clients were people from the neighborhood, people from my past, people who had never hired a detective before, comfort was important.

IPS

Sophie goes home and reaches out. Makes an attempt. Something is on TV, she watches it with her mother. She says it's a good story. Sometimes there are good things on. Her father has a tape recorder. He tapes family parties, and her little brother playing the piano. She likes these best. I listen to them, and picture her listening to them.

HEALTH AND EFFICIENCY

I like coming to this place. It is very bright inside, and spacious. There are so many things here, so many herbs, roots, and vitamins that could make me more than I am.

MANIFESTO

It all started a year ago. It was my daughter's birthday. I did not have enough money to get her a toy so I thought I would try the claw machine by the bodega. I thought long and hard about what toy she would want and put in my fifty cents. I moved the claw towards the pink heart bear and let it drop. It dropped right on the bear then started to go up. It went all the way to the top before it even grabbed. I thought it was just a mistake so I put in another fifty cents and tried again but the same thing happened again. I got so mad I smashed the machine with a brick. When the brick broke the plastic glass I felt a power. It felt like all the times I had been ripped off by other machines were gone. It felt like I was doing something for other people who have been ripped off. We are all getting ripped off all the time by companies and the government but no one ever does anything. Well that night I did something. I took a brick and I smashed it. And the power was so great I made a plan. I would walk through the neighborhood by day and look for the machines. When I saw them I would write where they were on a map. Then at night I would go out with my brick and flashlight and map and break one machine at night. Soon I could not stop. I left my neighborhood and got on the train. I went to different places and smashed their machines. Some people have called me a Robin Hood but I am not that. I am just a regular guy who has been ripped off too many times and took it into his own hands to make it right. This is not a confession. This is a way to explain so that people know I am doing it for them and not for me. And I will keep doing it until I get caught. But after me there will be more. Because people are tired of the claw machines and the ripoffs and they will fight back. I am not the best I am just the first. So watch out machines because I am coming with my bricks and map and I will get you every time. Signed WOULDN'T YOU LIKE TO KNOW???
